I know it sounds like I’m pooping all over this book, and I really did bardugp it overall, it just went in a totally different sstorm than expected.

But the plot is derivative, the pacing of the book is erratic, events that should seem like major points seem to occur without the fanfare or explanation you would expect, and contrived plot points seem invented to create drama and keep the love interests apart.

This is really hard to rate, because I really liked some parts, and really disliked others.

How am I meant to make it a whole year with that hanging over my head?! And I loved seeing so many of the minor characters again.

Something that I actually had a real problem with was the fact that there were only four major characters in stom novel and apart from Alina all of them were men, which is a problem in and of its self but also all of them were for some reason romantically interested in her. So even though The Grisha series is a new favorite for me, I still had these concerns.

I love Nicolai and the darkling. I mean, I swear that Leigh is either trying to drive me insane or make me burst out sobbing!

But she isn’t the same person anymore, and the Darkling is the one to blame. Both are epic people. Mal is a dull character. The books feature fun infographic style illustrations. This series is one about awful characters doing awful things in which the lead is basically slowly turning evil and the villain is maybe possibly doing it for the right reasons and the stirm interest is insecure and the princes are shitty and really, no one is doing the right thing, and certainly not for the right reasons.

But Darkling isn’t the only one antagonizing Mal. Emotion is raw and real. I get it now. It has the most exquisitely constructed world, the best-written characters, the most amazing writing and storyline.

I was never bored throughout this book! I adore the writing – it’s so lyrical, so beautiful, yet so modern and witty and funny. Somehow, she will have to choose between her country, her power, and the love she always thought would guide her–or risk losing everything to the oncoming storm. First book started strong.
