And in this effort, he is one billions times successful, you feel his pain, his joy, his delusion and disappointment every step of the way, you are there on his journey through the fever, pain and betrayal in Mexico City, to the joy of summing in Dharma Bums and of the near alcoholic psychosis of Big Sur.

Nothing but a hedenistic band of eclectic “do-nothings. Guy gets too close to woman, tries to create some distance, ends up losing what he had and forgets how good subterranwos had it. And while I did find myself on the fence about whether I actually enjoyed the book as I worked through it, the ending was strong enough to pull over into the plus column. I was put of by the style when I began the book but came away concluding it fit the subject matter. Somehow, though, even though this sort of melancholic epiphany seems to be kerouav for his endin I really loved this book. Reading this book is more like being carried away in a river current than actually reading.
Lists with This Book. Set in San Francisco, with friends like Ginsberg and Burroughs disguised with pseudonyms, it tells of a love affair with a half-negro, half-Cherokee woman. The pity of it is that Jack really appears to have loved Mardou, and Mardou was worth krouac trouble.

Consider that an interracial relationship would have been pretty radical in the 50’s, and both Kerouac’s alter ego, Leo and Mardou both realize this. Whereas Kerouac’s The Subterraneans is an exercise in style, Brautigan’s Sombrero Fallout is more substantial than one would gather from its simplistic style.

In that regard Kerouac was never more open and honest than in his writing, he laid it all out there, his soul for dissection. Brautigan fetishized Japanese style, and wrote in the style of the Japanese I-Novel with the exception of Sombrero Falloutkeroyac lacks a first person narrator. Yet here that seemed to take away from the effect rather than enhance it.
At a superficial level, it is merely a novella about how a relationship can crumble in the face societal pressures.
