This novella takes the opportunity to explore the relationship between an African American woman Mardou Fox and a Caucasian male Leo Percepied. I really loved this book. While messy, one can’t deny Kerouac’s honesty, his way with words. I fall in and out of love with Kerouac’s prose, but his story rips your heart out.

And in this effort, he is one billions times successful, you feel his pain, his joy, his delusion and disappointment every step of the way, you are there on his journey through the fever, pain and betrayal in Mexico City, to the joy of summing in Dharma Bums and of the near alcoholic psychosis of Big Sur.

Nothing but a hedenistic band of eclectic “do-nothings. Guy gets too close to woman, tries to create some distance, ends up losing what he had and forgets how good subterranwos had it. And while I did find myself on the fence about whether I actually enjoyed the book as I worked through it, the ending was strong enough to pull over into the plus column. I was put of by the style when I began the book but came away concluding it fit the subject matter. Somehow, though, even though this sort of melancholic epiphany seems to be kerouav for his endin I really loved this book. Reading this book is more like being carried away in a river current than actually reading.

In that regard Kerouac was never more open and honest than in his writing, he laid it all out there, his soul for dissection.
